Willits was originally called "Willitsville". Later, when the post office opened in 1861, it was called "Little Lake". The name changed to Willits in 1874. The community incorporated in 1888.

he scenery in Willits is breathtaking, the sweetest little town nestled in the Redwoods, a mere thirty minute drive to get to the Pacific coast. Willits is a small town with promise.

The Mendocino County Museum also lies in Willits which is displays a large collection of the Native American artifacts. This museum is thoroughly amusing. There is yet another thing you would not want to miss here and that is a visit to the historical race horse Seabiscuit at the Ridgewood Ranch. Plus, other activities include golfing and casinos along with a wide range of outdoor fun.
